Godwits Nestwatch

The RSPB will be continuing its protection of black-tailed godwits at Newton Marsh near Preston, thanks to a grant award from Cory Environmental Trust in Britain through the Landfill Communities Fund. The grant will allow a Nestwatch Project to continue for the next 2 years and beyond by providing dedicated staff time for the nestwatch, and the provision of a caravan to house volunteers delivering the 3½ month round the clock nestwatch!

With only one to three pairs breeding in the North of England under threat from egg thieves, the RSPB set up a nestwatch. Run by staff and volunteers, the nestwatch operates during the breeding season.

Since its inception the Nestwatch Project has grown from strength to strength. Guided walks have taken place across surrounding farmland showing local residents the wonderful bird inhabitants. A breeding wader survey was carried out in the area and local people were encouraged to get involved in the nestwatch. Community involvement not only engenders local pride but also means that the local community is well informed and is able to act as an effective second tier of protection under the Nestwatch Project itself.
