The Future for Lancashire's Wildlife

22nd May 2010, 10am - 4pm at The Harrington Building, University of Central Lancashire(UCLAN), Preston

The Partnership would like to invite you to celebrate the wide variety of work being done by individuals, groups and organisations to conserve and inspire people about biodiversity and the natural world.

This is a free event held biannually to get anyone working (or wanting to work) for wildlife and nature conservation in Lancashire together, to inform people about work in Lancashire and further a field, and promote what we all do, especially as it is International Year of Biodiversity and the conference will take place on International Biodiversity Day.

We will provide a buffet lunch and refreshments which are free. UCLAN has generously provided the facilities.

To fit in as much of the work as possible we have organised the day to not only include some inspiring presentations, but also a wide choice of workshops, and even a chance to exhibit work or apply to get a poster printed free of charge !!!!! This facility is kindly provided by the Environment Agency.

Session 1

LERN: Learn about the development of the Local Record Centre for Lancashire, the work it does and how you can get involved.
Lancashire Flora: An inspiring talk about the state of plant species, causes of decline, and what we are doing to conserve them.

The Brown Hare Survey will continue in 2010, and this will involve walking a transect from a 1km grid square in Lancashire, noting the Brown Hare’s seen. Dont be daunted by the sound of it, its ideal for anyone, and we have some early Spring events organised and confirmed, and there will be more to follow later in the year! These events will give you all the background you need to get going on the survey, and don’t forget you can always put in your incidental Brown Hare sightings online via the website www.brownhare.org.uk – it all helps record the Brown Hare populations and contributes to their conservation.

Biodiversity Forum: Urban Greenspace and Biodiversity

27th January 2010, 1pm at The Barn, Lancashire Wildlife Trust HQ.

The afternoon event will explore the potential and practicalities of embedding biodiversity in urban greenspace schemes, drawing upon organisations, expertise and case studies set to inspire us to build upon the already demonstrated aptitude in Lancashire.

In a series of presentations, speakers will cover a wide variety of subjects. James Hitchmough (Dept. Landscape, University of Sheffield) will provide a broad overview of urban biodiversity and greenspace, drawing on landscape management/design expertise and include experiences from working on the Olympic park for London 2012. Grant Luscombe and Richard Scott (Landlife) will add to the day with their work bringing nature and people closer together on Merseyside. Lancashire County Council will also provide case studies for delivering linear corridors for further greenspace delivery (K Horsley, Environmental Projects Team), and also delivery of biodiversity on multi-use post-industrial/Brownfield sites (REMADE).
